CELEBRATING WORD AND IMAGE 1250-1600
t is the ideal setting to view twelve rare and precious
illuminated manuscripts from the Kerry Stokes Collection.
Rising like a mirage from the bush, the New Norcia
Benedictine Monastery with its spires, statues and
Spanish-inspired architecture creates the perfect ambience to
fully appreciate the exquisite work of the monks and scribes
who decorated the pages of these remarkable documents. With
patient dedication they added decorated capitals and serpentine
borders to the texts, rendered in gold, silver and lapis lazuli.
Leader of the Benedictine Community, Abbot John Herbert
OSB, concurs. “Illuminated manuscripts fi rst developed in the
monasteries of Western Europe, so this exhibition is a perfect fit
for New Norcia, Australia’s only monastic town,” he says.
As well as manuscripts designed for st udy of the liturgy, one
volume from Nuremberg, produced in the 16th century, depicts
the city’s butchers and patrician families celebrating a sensuous
carnival just before the onset of the rigours of Lent. Together,
the twelve remarkable manuscripts provide an extraordinary
window into a world whose echo remains in the small
community of New Norcia, still active four hundred years later.
Celebrating Word and Image 1250-1600 is supported by
a book published by Fremantle Press.
New Norcia Benedictine Community Gallery, until March 17.
