qELVIS AT 21
Before he became the King, El vis Presley was
a t wen tysomething singer on the cusp of stardom.
Along for the ride was photojournalist Alfred
Wer theimer, hired by RCA Victo r in 1956
to shoot promotio nal images of the recen tly
signed recording ar tist. We rtheimer’s instincts
to ‘tag alo ng’ with the a rtist after the assignmen t,
a nd the resu lting images, provide us today with
a can did look at Elvis before he exploded o nto
the scene and became one of the most exciting
performers of his time.
