Elliot Alexa nder (above) talks about his specialist website,
endemicworld, a curated collection of art prints from New
Zealand and arou nd the world. endemicworld.com.
What is endemic world all about?
It’s all about making really happy customers. I know that sounds cheesy, but its
true. The difference is that our customers are those who buy art for their own
walls, to artists that we do printing for, to design stores and galleries that we
distribute art to. So that’s what it’s about, but what we ‘do’ is curate a selection
of art prints from around the world and sell them online and in-store.
The website says you love art prints. Tell us why...
We grew up around art and graphics. Our family business is Studio Alexander,
a design business, so our memories as kids are of spending the weekends
at Dad ’s st udio, drawing on giant white pads attach ed to those big, le aning
graphic-drawing desks. It’s also quite fun geeking out over inks, printing
methods and fancy art papers. So much work goes into creating an art print,
the finished product brings so many smiles and good feelings to one’s space.
You curate the works yourselves. What do you look for?
There is no straight an swer. O ur cu sto mers expect u s to select wo rk that
they like. We often get caught out choosing work we like. 70 per cent of our
cu stomers are fro m NZ and slowly they are getting braver with their choices
a nd styles, so this is always changing. This is o n e of the most en joyable
parts. Reading and surfing, while we hunt out the new young guns out there.
What are some of your favourite works in the shop at the moment?
Faves right now would have to be G eorgie
Malyon and her photographic prints of
s kulls and flower s, Margare t Petchell
paints huge portraits of birds (right).
Cinzah Merkens has a wonderful illustrative
style, very international – he has won
illust ration aw ard s in Aust ralia. A nd fina lly
Kyle Boonzaier, a young kid who has energy
to burn, and a style that might be just
a bit too cool for school.
