t IF THE WORLD CHANGED
If the World Changed features established and emerging artists
primarily based in or with links to Southeast Asia who reflect,
mediate and envision responses to our changing worlds and the
worlds we want to live in. Works on show at this year’s Biennale
span a whole host of media, from installations to paintings,
photography, video and collaborative works.

When cultu res come together, whether thro ugh migratio n ,
inte rmarriage, cu ltural bo rrowing, o r mixi ng of ideas,
distinc tive wo rk s of ar t a re created. The A sian Civilization s
Museum presents D evotion a nd Desi re: Cross-Cultura l Art
in Asia, showcasing over 170 new objects acquired by the
Museum. The ex hibition presen ts work s of ar t that sho w
how people of diverse cu ltu res an d faiths have lived together
harmoniously for centuries throughout Asia. Themes of the
exhibition include the i mpo rtance of trade, tran smissio n of
religions, courtly art, and colonial networks.

In his latest ex hibition , artist Qiu Jie co nfro nts the histo ry of
Chinese society with con temporary Western popular cu lture.
Befo re moving to Switzerlan d in 1989, Qiu Jie spent his
childhood in China du ring the C ultu ral Revolutio n, drawing
an d copying propagan da images fro m lo cal newspapers.
Today, each of his drawings is i nspired by existing images
ex tracted from an infi nite pa nel of so u rces; from n ewspapers
an d advertising to pai ntings an d photos. The a rtist, acting
like a n ovelist, uses these ex isting charac ters o r elemen ts of
context to compose a story of his own.
