Home' Scoop Homes and Art : Scoop Homes and Art 38 Contents Director Ben Evans talks about
one of the most important eve nts
on the global design calendar,
the London Design Festival.
How has the Festival evolved ove r the past 11 years?
The Lo ndon Design Festival doubled in size fo r the first three years,
and reached the size it is today after five years. It is now a fixture on the
international calendar, and one of the leading design events in the world.
That mean s we at tract increasing n u mbers of internation al visito rs an d
participan ts, w hich is impor tant. While 90 per cen t of the Festival is
delivered by ou r partn ers, we ru n a major commissio n ing program, i ncluding
at our hub venue, the V&A Museum. The Festival has built a reputation as
a place for ideas and enjoys an audience in excess of 300,000.
What are the highlight eve nts from the 2013 programme?
This year, o u r major co mmission is outside St Paul’s C athedral . C alled
Endless Stair, it is a stru ctu re made up of 16 wooden flights of stairs that
don ’t take yo u an y where. It is in spired by Escher’s neverending stair. At the
V&A there is a full progra m of projects, including an i mmersive tu nn el made
en tirely of co rk, an d a 25m glass chan delier.
To the future ... What will be the most significant change/innovation to
the design industry in the next few years?
3D printing is the biggest chan ge the design industry will ex perien ce
in so me time. While n ot everyon e is in favou r, and there are things the
techn ology can’t do, it will chan ge o u r lives.
Why do you think London is the world’s most creative capital?
We are lucky in London because we have such an international design
scen e. Indeed, most of ou r design sta rs don’t have B ritish passpo rts,
but live and work in our city so we can claim them as ours. Many came
to study here an d stayed; others have been at tracted by the prospect
of wo rk an d being part of something. Without the best talent you are
nothing. But it has taken 50 years to build that reputation and the task
now is maintaining it. I hope that the Festival goes some way to help keep
Lo n do n’s reputation high.
