Perth ex-pat Emma Phillips has worked in the creative industries for
more than 16 years and is now based in London, w ith an eye on design.
London has a new obsession... the roof terrace. For a city so old, developed and
architecturally adventurous, places to meet and socialise above the rooftops
have been surprisingly thin on the ground! This is, in some part, a side effect of
the original great British pre-occupation (the rubbish weather), but over the past
couple of years more and more venues have opened atop commercial buildings.
From the too-coo l-fo r-sch ool ba rs a nd exclusive me mb er clubs in Ea st Lond on,
to chi-chi restaurants in the City and sophisticated hotels in the West End, the
sky’s now the limit for dining and drinking in the clouds. Maximising rooftop
living space is also now a common feature in the new-build market, as we see in
the award-winning Slip House in Brixton.
The Vitra D esign Mu seu m (located in Weil am Rhein , Germany) dedicates its first co mprehensive
ex hibition to the design of artificial lighting, a su bject that has fascin ated design ers, a rtists an d
