Uruguay | The best of both worlds
Owner Elena talks about her new home.
What do you love most about the house?
It has allo wed me to emulate a lifelon g drea m,
ru n ni ng a pousada, o r small guesthouse. In practice
it’s so mething I have never do n e, but I feel that
running a home for the entire family and offering
comfo rt to ever yo ne for a weekend stay seemed
a good alternative...
What’s your favourite holiday with the family?
The hou se can really be en joyed at any time of
the year. It is divided into different parts to enable
me to close down a part in winter, or dependent
on how many guests are visiting (or if I’m by
myself). The terrace offers per fect shade on
a hot and sunny day, and even during the rainy
mo ments we can stay o utside. The eno rmou s
dining table was co nstructed of a former ma nger
for animals, and the top used to be a worktop in
a former baker y. It took eight people to carr y it
and put it in the right place!
crockery belonging to different generation s
of the family. “We believe it’s a fantastic
eye-catcher when you walk into the living
area, and it holds so many family stories
inside,” says Elena, who still collects
additional pieces from auctions to enhance
her private collection.
Elena and Juan have successf ully
created an inspiring contrast between
contemporary and classical styles,
the past and the present coming together
under one roof to tell tales of family history
and attract generations of Grañas to
holiday here throughout the year.
11 The view from the living area towards the corridor,
off which are the six double bedrooms. The portrait
on top of the antique French Louis XVI cabinet in
the hallway is of Elena when she was a little girl.
“The enormous dining table
was constructed of a former
manger for animals, and the
top used to be a worktop in a
former bakery. It took eight
people to carry it!”
