p Picking up the pieces
With a mission of zero wood waste in New Zealan d, Christchu rch ’s Rekindle
project has created a range of beautiful tables an d chairs from demolition timber.
There a re up to 12,000 ho mes to be demolished in Christchurch following the 2011
ea rthquakes so there’s n o shor tage of raw material: with the a mo u nt of wood fou n d
in an average weatherboard house, Rekindle can make 42 chairs. The co mpa ny
respo nds to the utility of these materials, celebrates the i mper fection of the timber,
and lets the stor y come thro ugh in its ha nd-crafted pro ducts. The Weatherbo ard
series chair (above) is priced NZ$280 ($230). Rekindle.org.nz .
