THE BUSINESS OF DESIGN
Hong Kong-based designer Michael
Young was a keynote speaker at Australia’s
designEX 2013 Business of Design speaker
series, where he concentrated on a nu mber
of economic issues.
What is the current economic climate in
your field, and what is its effect on local
practices? As an office we are not short
of offers and pro jects, so we are luck y.
But I get the feeling that there a re quite
a few very poo r design ers o ut there at the
moment, which is quite sad as I know how
hard times are. I am in Hong Kong, and
frankly there are only a handful of designers
he re... it’s a ban kers’ city, really.
Over your 20 years in the industry, how
have you maintained the mome ntum to
continually pioneer technology? I guess
think that much about it. I keep my ears
and eyes open an d work with good people.
I learn by moving fo rward.
How has the rise of China as an ind ustrial
world powe r affected your business
personally? I came to A sia to find my own
way in life. We are helping a lot of companies
that have gone through a lot of economic
stress to keep moving. O n a person al level,
it has made me grow up a lot.
