BREATHING NEW LIFE INTO PHILANTHROPY
WORDS Gail Robinson
They first met during the birth of a new generation of contemporary
sculptors in Perth, and now artist Peter Dailey and collector Lloyd Horn
have been reunited through The Syndicate Project II, Perth’s newest
approach to philanthropy.
It gives o ne exceptio n al mid-caree r scu lptor the oppo rtu nity to develop
figu rative work , free of the need to earn a living, for two yea rs. The o n ly brief
is to interpret the figu re in ten life-size a rt wo rk s. Fu nded by The Syndicate
(formed by Lloyd), 10 like-minded patrons who contribute an equal amount,
they see the sculptures being produced and get a feel for the work and artist
behind it. Each membe r receives o ne piece by ballot befo re exhibitio n .
Pete r is the sel ected a rtist for The Syndicate Proje ct II. “ He was an ideal
choice,” says Lloyd. “ The fi rst piece of sculptu re I owned was Peter’s, so
we have followed his career and know his work well. We consider him an
impo rtan t mid-career artist who deser ved the oppo rtu n ity.”
Pete r, whose work is held by all major state collections, says he feels
honoured to be chosen. “ I hope the work is seen as successful so it might
enco u rage people interested in doing something si milar,” he says. “ We
don’t have a strong history of philanthropy in WA, so I hope this can be the
beginning of so mething larger.”
