INVEST IN HERO PIECES
Not everything needs to be designer, but it’s important to know where
to spend you r mon ey wisely. A few things that I think are impor ta nt are
large ticket furn itu re items, like you r sofa, dining table a nd bed.
I also love a hero piece in every room – be it artwork or a furniture piece
– it creates a focal point a nd draws in the eye. Think carefully about
the placement an d what goes where. Fo r example, a well-placed Gra nt
Feathersto n mid-cen tu r y chair ma kes a statemen t. There are plenty of copies
ou t there, but I believe you sho uld always invest in the real thing in cases
like this. These are i nvestmen t pieces that will be in u se for a lo n g time.
The other thing I always feel is worth paying for is good-quality bed linen,
especially sin ce sheets get softer with ever y wash.
PREP THE CANVAS
Think of the walls and floors as a canvas. These surfaces are the starting
point for most rooms, so consider colour and texture. I love to paint –
it’s a quick way of updating a space (or even a piece of fu rnitu re). My favourite
shades a re soft blue, chalky white an d wa rm neu trals, perhaps with a pop
of bright colour. Be brave and play with colour, it’s such a simple thing,
but colo ur really does brighten a day!
Once you’ve got this down, cover your walls with art you love (I combine
art an d prints fro m photographers). Then dress yo ur fl oo rs with u n ique rugs
in n atu ra l mate rials, which are lovely u n der fo ot.
