WHAT’S THE STORY?
Heritage British tableware company Royal Doulton celebrates its London
roots with a suite of new collections inspired by living in contemporary
London. O ne of the ranges, Fable, is a collaboration with illustrator
Karolin Schnoor. The German- born, London-based artist/designe r d raws
on her passion for bold colours and clean lines, and is heavily infl uenced
by the folk art she reme mbers from children’s books. That charmingly
naïve quality shines through in Fable....
How did your collaboration with Royal Doulton come about?
Royal Doulto n got in tou ch with me after seeing my work o nline, and we had
a meeting to discuss what they were hoping to do with their new range.
Looking back it seems quite crazy, but at the time I just thought, 'Sure,
I’ll design so me plates. Why n ot?'.
What was the process like, working with such an iconic British brand?
I was daunted at first, as being confronted with such a rich brand history and
a lot of really beautiful old designs can be intimidating. But once I started
working on it, it was lovely. I had so much freedom and the process was
incredibly enjoyable. I had a lot of time to draw an d ex perimen t, an d we then
wo rked together to edit the ideas down to so mething more tan gible. It felt
collaborative without being prescriptive.
What’s your favourite piece and why? My favou rite is definitely the tree
design. It has so mething timeless an d I like the even feel of the pattern .
Sta rting at £5 (AU$7.50), Fable is available from royal-doulton.com.
