Designer Gary Keen talks about his favourite part
of the home, his overarching design philosophy
and considerations for coastal builds.
What was the biggest splurge? Probably in
the con text of the home, the biggest splurge
was the sliding cavity door dividing the pool
area a nd fro nt alfresco. It is made from teak slats
an d is o ne of my favourite parts of the design.
I was lucky enough to have the client’s backing for
the idea, so it’s a real treat.
How would you describe your design style? A
funny thing I tell my clients is that houses should be
sophisticated but relaxed, which sounds like an utter
cont radiction but I don’t want it to be oste ntatious
and unusable. I think luxury is about using lots of
different textures and playing with space; there’s a
big difference between luxury and bling.
Are there any design considerations people have
to take into account for coastal homes? Material
selection is critical in coastal home design – you
have the wind, sea spray, salt, rust and corrosion
among other things, so you have to go for a better
quality product than you would over the hill from the
beach because it will last longer and serve you well.
Are green design principles for coastal designs
any different from inland homes? There is no
difference bet ween green prin ciples of coastal
homes and inland homes. The only variation is
pro bably that solar panels have to keep clea n of
salt to wo rk well so they may n eed more clean ing,
but the design elements sho uld be relatively the
same as inlan d properties.

problem with me is that I get bored easily, so
we’re looking to move on and start again.”
