Corinne Girard Young reveals the secrets behind her design.
When you are designing your own home, how does the process
differ from working for a client? I think the process is largely the
sa me. I respected my family’s n eeds as mu ch as I would respect a
clien t’s n eeds. The o nly difference is you might take a few mo re risk s.
Do you have a favourite part of the home? The void space created
by the main courtyard. It’s very intimate and has an incredible sense of
privacy. The outlook is so calming because of the river view, an d it has a
ver y peaceful, almost mo nastery-like feel.
How important is it for a home to anchor itself into the natural
landscape? Very. I wanted o ur home to have a dialogue with
St Ignatius’ College, and respect the heritage of the sa ndstone
ho mes in Hu n ters Hill. It’s also attached to the sa ndsto ne cliff,
so I think we’ve achieved that ai m.
Tell us the one piece of design advice you learned as a young
architect that you’ve never forgotten. The redu ctive natu re of Mies
va n der Rohe’s mot to, ‘ Less is mo re’, is a co n stan t reminder that simple
elegan t solution s are always the best. This means I always strive for
architectu ral richn ess throu gh info rmed simplicity.

for a beautiful feature in Corinne’s favourite courtyard.
06 Sweeping views across the river to St Ignatius’ College
and its Georgian buildings create a peaceful outlook.
07 The beauty of this home lies in the fact that it continues to
reveal itself to you as you walk through it.
