Melissa Bright of MAKE Architectural Studio discusses the project.
What’s your favourite feature of the home? I’m most excited abo ut
this idea of flexibility, how things might overlap an d how you can make
spaces wo rk ha rder to do many things.
Any tips for working on old homes? New stuff should look new, and old
stuff should look old. Stay true to the period and tradition of the house
and sympathetic to the heritage, but allow the contemporar y to sit
ha rmo nio usly with the old.
Any concept you would apply again? I love the idea of a do uble
layer/double skin to a building. O ne skin that ca n be ai rtight, closed
an d secu re to the outside, which we have achieved with the glass; and
an other skin of weatherboard sliders that creates permeable shade an d
privacy. That’s so mething we’re interested in using o n other buildings.
What does this house represent for MAKE A rchitectural Studio?
The ho me represen ts a more su stain able way of livi ng an d proves that
smaller can be mo re co mfor table. High ceilings cou n terac t the lack of
huge spraw ling ro oms and fill the home with an abun dance of natu ral
light an d fresh air.
