Welsh-born Bethan Gray is one of Britain’s
most celebrated fu rnitu re design ers, best know n
for her liveable, honest and warm designs. She cut
her teeth at Habitat, w here she was head of fu rn iture
design, before going it alone in 2008. Most recently
Betha n has established G&T – a co llaboratio n with fu rnitu re
man ufacturer Tho mas Turn er – that has attracted the attentio n of majo r
retailers John Lewis, The Conran Shop, Liberty London and Lane Crawford
in Ho ng Ko ng. She work s predo minately with natu ral materials in cluding
wood, sto ne an d leather.
You are nominated for a British Design Award – how important are
awards to you? It is an honour to have been nominated for the British Design
Awards along with such great designs, and I am pleased that the Carve
collection, la unched this year, has been received so well.
You also consult on t rends to various businesses. What trends are
comi ng up for 2013? Warm metallics, such as copper a nd brass, are
replacing cold metal fi nishes. Mixing materials i n on e produ ct in also key.
What’s inspiring you right now? I love the Birds by Kristian Vedel.
Even though the birds were design ed in 1959, the design is timeless
an d still ver y appealing today. They are crafted fro m high-quality
oak and are full of character.
What new products can we look forward to from G&T in the New Year?
We have just launched the Brogue coffee table that is made of leather and
oa k with a n intricate broguing detail – we will look at an u pholstered piece to
acco mpan y the table ran ges.

Boya rsk y Mu rphy Architects have co mpleted a n in novative hou se in a co mplex
infill site in Maida Vale, No rth West Lon don . The site had been left derelict for
decades beca use there were n o obviou s ways to develop it. Wedged between
two i mposing Victo rian en d- of-terrace buildings, with a street fron tage of
less tha n three metres, the site is 11m deep an d 7.5m wide at the rea r of the
proper ty. The completed project resulted in a stacked con figu ration with
plenty of n atu ral light whilst retaining pri vacy from the many n eighbou ring
SHED LOADS OF STYLE
Tetra Shed is a n eat an d inventive modular con cept that moves the
garden office/studio to a new aesthetic level. Design ed by a rchitects
Innovation Imperative, the basic unit has a footprint of about 10sqm and
co mprises a stru ctu ral timbe r co re extern ally clad in ru bber, fi nished in
any RAL colour or a choice of either copper, zinc, corten steel or marine
plywood cladding. The brilliantly clever modular building system provides an
