CONTEMPORARY ART OF MELVILLE ISLAND
‘Bush holiday time is when we burn the long grass after the wet
season. Yapalika is my traditional country. There is a big water
hole we go swimming in and a camp site called Wunipi’

Carving a niche
It started in a backyard shed, now artistic furniture company Jahroc,
based in Margaret River, is celebrating 25 years in the industry. Designer
Gary Bennett (one half of the business with David Paris) tells us about
the success he puts down to “making it up as we went along”.
When we started, there really wasn’t a niche for artistic fine furniture.
People wanted more mainstream, reproduction-style stuff. That ’s cer tainly
changed over the past decade. No w mo re people are u sing architects, an d
there’s a bette r u nderstanding of design i n gene ral.
WA has probably been the leader in A ustralia for artistic furniture.
A lot of people sta rted doing it here, like ou rsel ves, without really knowi ng
what it was.... We became quite a strong little group trying to do things
differently. That ’s chan ging a bit no w, becau se other states have got on to it,
an d there are so me people ma king really amazi ng things.
The industry is doing it pretty tough at the moment. There’s a lot of
co mpetitio n from impo rted fu rnitu re, a nd many big man ufacturers have
go ne by the wayside. Little studio makers like us han g in there because we
do n’t n eed as mu ch work , a nd have a sma ller, mo re niche clientele.
It was great when we won ‘Best of the Best’ of all categories at the
Australian Furniture Industry Association Awards [in 2002]. We’ve
backed it up with a few more of those in WA over the following years. It’s
always n ice to be recognised by you r peers.
Our business has given us everything we’ve got – and I’m amazed by
w hat we’ve got. We’re really just a couple of chippies. We have design ers
come in and say, where did you train? And I didn’t train anywhere. We just
make it up as we go along.
