aving worked on numerous
kitchens in the past, Sally
and Clinton Matthews of
Matthews Architecture had
a definite idea of what they wanted
in their own home.
The entire project required an extensive
renovation of the existing small duplex.
Designed by Sally and constructed
by Prescott Cabinets, with specialist
cabinetwork by Philipp Rinkens, the
kitchen kept its place in the layout and
took advantage of the available services.
The layout reinforced the defined
circulation spine through the house and
enabled the cooker to be safely used away
from foot tra ffic bet ween the inside of the
house and the rear external space.
A strong emphasis was placed on
communal use and interaction. For this
reason, the kitchen has access to light and
views to both the front and rear of the site,
extending the feeling of space.
The long central bench is free of
appliances, making it the perfect space
for meal preparation, breakfast-bar
seating, entertaining guests, and helping
their two daughters with their homework.
Made of ply timber, the bench is warm to
the touch while the softness accumulates
the marks of use over time, adding plenty
of character. It can also be refinished at
a later stage.
Pendant lights hang over the island
bench, all lights in the kitchen and

tones of the timber on the bench and
the floor, while off-white laminate gloss
cupboards reflect the northern light. The
simple colour of these cupboard fronts
and the white granite benchtops defers to
the central bench, which is the main focus
of the kitchen.
To top it all off, the elevation of the block

the ocean, which can all be seen from the
