Owner and interior designer
Bryan Wallace talks about the house
What’s your favourite feature of the home?
The flow and the surprise. From outside, the
house is quite modest and people expect the
interio r to be small. You do n’t imagin e it will open
out the way it does at the back.
Is there anything you would have done
differently? I would have put the rea r alfresco in
much earlier – I only built it a year ago, and it’s
proved great fo r en ter taining.
Where have you splurged? On some
of the fu rn ishings. For example, the
mo dern i nterpretatio n of an ar t deco chaise,
covered in velvet with chro me trim, is o ne of
just two in Austra lia.
Where have you saved? By doing my own
restoratio n or improvemen t wo rk on so me
fu rnitu re. I stripped an d repainted two an tique
French armchairs an d had them reupholstered.
I took an old jarrah desk and applied several
layers of Black Japan stai n, san ding bet ween
co ats, to make it look distin ctive an d elegan t.

Apart from this cheeky aside, the
dining room is a celebration of art deco.
There are silver wall sconces and white
and chrome cabinets either side of the
fireplace. A grey crystal chandelier hangs
above the dining table, which is made of
French oak. This, and the Italian beech
dining chairs, Bryan stained brown-
black. The elegant dark furniture and
strict symmetry on the hearthside wall
lend the room a theatrical air.
As he tells the history of every piece of
furniture and accessory, how and where
he found each one, Bryan’s passion is
clear. His home is lovingly put together,
with each item playing its role in the big
production nu mber.

When the weather is inclement,
ANTIQUE DOORS a re cl osed
to provide shelter in the alfresco.
Previously just a lawn with an
overgrown pine hedge, the front
garden has been transformed into
a NEAT PARTERRE, with twin
crepe myrtles as the feature trees.
