Scott Bridgens and Simon James have formed Resident to bring contemporary New Zealand
design and ma nufactur ing to Europe. Prom ising a “clea n, crafted, f unctiona l and thought-provoking
collection”, Resident aims to seek out new materials and man ufacturing techniques and to create most
of its collection as low-volume, flat-packed products for easy shipping. With a Eu ropean hub for the
business, new products will be released at design shows each year in London and Milan. resident.co.nz.
Designer Rugs’ Kiwi Icon Collection combines two of New Zealand’s best
exports – design and wool. Artists Dick Frizzell and Max Gimblett, singer Boh
Runga, fashion designers Zambesi and Kate Sylvester, ad man Kevin Roberts
from Saatchi & Saatchi Global, a nd Codi Design h ave all contributed designs .

MAKING A MESH OF IT
Curate, a new fashion gallery in Auckland’s Britomart precinct,
has a sophisticated approach to retail. Nat Cheshire of Cheshire
Architects says, “Shopping here becomes a deliberate interaction –
people enter into the courtyard to find a sanctuary space within the
