DESIGN FOR (SMALL) LIVING
Brother/sister design tea m Lo uis an d Sophie Ralli started Ralli Design after
graduating from Central St Martins in 2009. Growing up in London has made
them interested in finding design so lution s fo r small-space livi ng. Their n ew
FIKA stacking tea set a nd tray (left) is both clever and bea utiful, stacking
neatly together. S ophie sha res some in spiratio n.
Describe your creative process. A project can start by looking at rituals and
routines and how they relate to the way a space or storage area is used. This can
highlight problems within a process, which we can then create a solution for.
Design heroes – who and why? Jean Prouvé’s work is an example of how to
get the most out of a material fro m the man ufacturing pro cesses available. He
created fu rnitu re that was ration al, elegan t and time less, all impo rtan t valu es to
us. Julia n Stair is a studio potter based in the UK. His wo rk demo n strates the
importance of form and scale of an object or group of objects.
What’s inspiring now? The tren d of ‘back to basics’ design con tin ues to be an
inspiration for us and there is a move towards a ‘buy once, buy well’ attitude,
with people wanting to own high-qu ality produ cts that work well an d will last.
