Interior design er Ed Ng (in set) an d architect Terence Ngan , fo un ders of
Hon g Kon g-based AB Co ncept, bring u rban energy to the beach with the
interiors of the new W Retreat & Spa i n B ali. It’s vibran t, bold and in spired
by nature. Ed fills us in on the details.
What’s the design style? Playful. We incor po rated local design elem ent s b ut
with a new twist. For example, straight stepping profiles, typical of pagoda
ro of s, were rei nterpreted in the eye-catching resin co nto urs of the ba r.
What inspired you? Architectu ral details an d the B alin ese set ting and
lan dscape, especially in o u r co lou r palette and tex tu res (su n rise, su nset an d
co astal-in spired pink s, pu rples a nd aquatic green s).
What is challenging about modern design at the beach? The tro pical
climate: the lobby had to be both weatherproof an d stylish. O ur open -plan
design allows for n atu ral ventilatio n , but has mo nsoo n shutters that blen d
into the profi le of the a rchitecture to en close the lobby when required.
What’s the overall mood? Joyo us. The design was infl uen ced by the lo cal
culture, but we also knew W would be the venue for celebrities and parties.
What’s your favourite bit? The lobby. While we n eeded to guide a nd
o rien tate gu ests thro ugh this space, we didn’t wan t it to feel overly stru ctured
so we created a featu re wa ll made of han d-blow n glass jars con taining capiz
shells that ‘sing’ again st the breeze.
The W Beijing is next on your list. Any insider info? It will open in the
first quarter of 2014. Beijing is all about power, scale and grandness so our
design will focus on the idea of Beijing as the capital of both politics an d
enter tainment. abconcept.net, starwoodhotels.com.
