Home' Scoop Homes and Art : SHA 29 Winter 2011 Contents ROADSIDE HAUL
It was pure luck that saw two WA antiques
experts bring home to Perth a haul of
good-quality antique rugs
Sourcing authentic rugs designed and made within
the one culture might be getting more difficult, but
the boys from Lauder and Howard Antiques and
Fine Art have recent proof that it’s still possible.
On their last buying trip for their new store,
Ottoman Empire, Les Lauder and Mark Howard
happened to be in Damascus, Syria, the day a group
of Dagestani pilgrims turned up with bus loads of
rugs. The story goes that the pilgrims had driven
4000km in a convoy of six Soviet-era buses on their
way to Mecca, but as Mecca became too full, the
Saudi government stopped issuing pilgrim visas.
The Dagestanis didn’t get further than Damascus
and it was here that Les and Mark found them with
bus-loads of the village treasures they had been
gathering throughout southern Russia and the
Caucasus to sell en route to pay for the pilgrimage.
“The ladies swept the pavement while one
of the men went to a nearby stall and bought
juice for us,” says Les. “Then they rolled out the most
beautiful rugs. Most of them were tribal rugs, which
are becoming harder and harder to find, and we
were very impressed with the quality.
“We bought 22 and would have bought more
except we had already bought quite a few in
Istanbul and Syria.”
The rugs will be on show at Ottoman Empire
on August 4. Les and Mark will be telling the
story and a rug expert will be on hand to give an
overview about rugs from the area. For details, visit
