A perfect contrast to the modern studio
is the rustic farmhouse. The original
sandstone walls, timber and tile flooring
and wooden ceiling beams were retained
to keep it as authentic as possible. And
whereas the studio/loft has a scandinavian
feel, the house reflects the melting pot
that is Majorca. The Romans, Arabs and
Europeans have all left their mark on its
landscape and culture. Taking reference
from each of those influences, the furniture,
items procured from flea markets and eBay,
and found objects, such as horns, lend a
rustic expression that feels like home.
“Even though we still have a flat in
London and we commute occasionally
for work... this is home,” Vikki says.
And what a beautiful home it is.
Karl and Vikki tell us about creating their home
How did you come up with the design for the loft?
“If I were an architect, we probably wouldn’t have
gone for something so complicated,” says Karl, “but
coming from a more naïve perspective, we went for
this, which fortunately worked out.”
How did you give the studio warmth? “With
traditional materials,” says Vikki. “An antique wooden
door and four-metre glass panels fitted with original
metal, wooden-clad storm doors. The special thing
about this property is the mix of new and old.”
What did you do outdoors? “We tamed and
tidied the garden,” laughs Vikki. “ We wanted to
create sitting areas and possibilities for photo shoots.
We set pepper trees, palm trees and succulents
against the sage-green gates and wooden shutters.”
