THE BRIGHT STUFF
The Plu men 0 01 is the world’s fi rst design er, en ergy-effi cien t light bulb,
a nd it recently wo n this year’s coveted B rit In suran ce D esign of the Year
award. Designed by Lon don -based Samu el Wilkinson fo r H ulger, the
clever a nd beautiful bulb is formed from two inter woven glass tubes that
cu rve o rgan ically. The effect created is a han ging illu min ated sculptu re
that u ses 80 per cen t less en ergy an d lasts about eight times lo nger than a
typical incan descen t bulb. Available fo r £ 19.95 ($32) at plu men.com.
Cong ratulations Samuel – w hat does winning this Design of the Year
award mean for you? Winning Design of the Year is fan tastic. It was a bit
of a surprise to even win our category as we were up against some amazing
products including the iPad and Dyson fan. Hopefully, with this award, I ’ll
be able to move on to bigge r an d better things!
What was the inspiration for the Plumen idea and design? The idea of
doing a ‘ design er’ lightbulb originally came fro m H ulger in 20 07, who then
a ppro ached me to design it. Most low-e nergy bulbs have such a cold form as if
designed by an engineer. We aimed to put a little joy back into the form. The
shapes were in spired by patterns made by a rhythmic gymn ast’s ribbo n an d
filamen ts of ea rly in candescent bulbs.
What does the rest of 2011 have in store for you? And what are you
working on at the mome nt? I’m working on quite a few pieces curren tly,
mostly fu rn iture, in cluding a chai r, can delabra, desk , parasol, credenza an d
some n ew lights. A lso a n ew productio n versio n of the Vessel light for
Decode London is launching soon.

A masterpiece in oil
Richard Wilson’s m aste rpiece 20:50, created in 1987, is the only per ma nent
ins tallation at the Saatchi Galler y. When the galler y moved to its new Sloane
Square HQ a room was de signed to house it. Viewed from a platform, the wor k
by Richard, a ce lebrated sculptor, is initially tricky to re ad: is it a polished floor,
infinite clea r pool or a mirror? Eventually, it becomes ev ide nt that the room is
entirely flooded with oil. It takes its nam e, 20:50, f rom the rec ycled engine oil
used. Duke of York ’s HQ, King’s Road, L ondon S W3 4SQ. saatchi-gallery.co.uk.
