CLOCKWISE from above The terrazzo bathroom basin; a view of the cabinetry through
the open-plan kitchen area and into the bathroom zone, which features a natural palette
of terrazzo and handmade concrete tiles. The floor is a slightly brushed cast plaster; a
skylight lets light into the dining area; the outdoor area is reflected in a door.
Homeowner Wolfgang Menardi
reveals his philosophy for the home
Your apartment reveals a penchant for flea markets...
I love flea markets, especially here in Berlin there are
many. I always find some treasures there... but also
the cellar of my Tyrolean family house in Austria
is a treasure trove.
What kind of pieces are you drawn to – new versus old?
I’m not sure it matters so much if it’s new or old.
I could not say I like a certain decade more than another
one... at the moment I have a certain interest in old rustic
Tyrolean furniture... I either really like something or
I really don’t like something. There is no grey area. For
my loft, I like things that have a history. I like to combine
different kinds of browns and natural shades. Thomas
Bendel’s design is very clean and stringent, so I can put
anything in there and move objects around as I please
and they always have a meaning that changes if they
are moved to another position.
What is your favourite item? My favourite piece at the
moment is my big wooden dining table that I got from a
friend. It’s so long that it didn’t fit in his home, so he gave
it to me. The table used to belong in an old ship factory,
where the grandfather of this friend worked, and it was
used for painting the ships. That’s why it is blue on one
side. It is massive and has a soothing effect on me. I
do everything there: working, eating, reading...
What do you love most about your home? I like that
the space calms me down completely and immediately
when I enter. I have to travel a lot and when I come home
I feel like I’m on an island. No one lives above me, no one
below me. There is nothing useless and, although it is
very strict, it has a warm atmosphere.
Your favourite feature in the home? The wash basin
made of terrazzo.
