When the hoarding finally came down around one of London’s most loved and
glamorous landmarks, a sigh of relief resounded collectively around the capital.
The grand old dame on The Strand – the Savoy Hotel – has been brought back
to her former glo ry, the ico nic silver fascia no w sparkling like a diamon d co cktail
ring at a No el Coward par ty. Designer Pierre Yves Ro chon was tasked with the
en ormou s interior proj ect that repo rtedly cost £100 million (A$156m), and ra n
more than a yea r over deadline. A team of 10 00 craftsmen and women , a rtists
an d artisans labou red to create the meticulo usly authen tic interio rs that truly
embody the spirit of the origina l edwardian and ar t deco aesthetics. While the
legen da ry River Restau ran t has been totally remodelled, new addition s i nclude a
two-bedroom Royal Suite, The Beaufort Bar and bijou teashop Savoy Tea.
With room rates starting at £325 (A$510) a royal purse may be necessary.
Although the S avoy will never claim to be the most design-sav v y hotel in L on don ,
in terms of histor y an d gran deu r it is absolutely u nrivalled. Visit the-savoy.co m.
