the kitchen, where the Brisbane head chef Anthony Schell will love
his new digs (food will be similar to the menu at the Brisbane, but lean
more towards the Italian). From there is a carpeted pool room and

“He [Geoff] had been looking for another challenge and, prior to
buying it, asked us to look at it,” says Graham Taylor. “It was a year
ago, we were at Rotto, and we’d done some sketches over an existing
floor plan. Over an afternoon, we refined it and we’ve delivered it.”
It’s not surprising that the major (read $4 million) remodelling took
just an afternoon when you consider Geoff and Graham have been
together working, remodelling and delivering some of the city’s best
social spaces for the past decade. However, when you consider the
evolution of the Boulevard, this makeover is testament to the genius
of the creative union.
Graham and senior design architect Benji Dzienciol say function
and ambience were the key considerations in the redesign. They
had to ensure the space could be all things to all people at any time
of the day. “One of the key things was to make it work as a daytime
and night-time venue, then we connected it with the context and
improved the connection back to the courtyard, as well as opening
up to the outside edge of the building to create a verandah,” explains
Graham. Adds Benji: “The term we are calling it is ‘relaxed eclectic’.
It is the kind of space that has interest and is relaxed, but is
unassuming.” Cheers to that. I
