lex Vintila brings more than a passio n fo r vintage pieces to Alexa nder
Carr Antiques. As a textile designer, he travels the world and creates
for the internation al fashion/fabrics ma rket, so it’s n o su rprise the
sto re has a highly deco rative appeal a nd a stron g emphasis on
textiles. A lex shares his passio n an d kn owledge of an i ndu stry where “ever ything
we cu rren tly see is a re-working of so mething that has happened in the past”.
What do you love about textiles? The fluidity an d potential sculptu ral quality
something we all have to consider every day of our lives.
Who do you sell your designs to? All major fashion retailers throughout
Australia, Europe a nd the United States, in cluding Calvin Klein Ho me, Do nn a
Ka ran , Colefax and Fowler, plus Co un try Road, Sheridan , an d B ed Bath N’ Table.
These co mpa nies have to buy origin al designs – they can’t just pu rchase fabric s.
How do create your designs? Essentially, I come up with concepts on cloth as
prototypes for textiles to be produced in quantity. Some I do digitally, a lot are
painted on to fabrics, while others I sen d overseas to be embroidered.
Where do your ideas come from? In some ways, I have to follow international
tren ds. I subscribe to fo recasting ser vices, w hich provide research a nd detailed
a nalysis of the market place.
What designs can we expect to see ove r summe r? In the fashion indu stry, we
design 24 mo nths ahead. Fo r su mmer, we will see refi ned an d elegan t tribal,
minimal colo u r an d fin e line. There is also a stron g trend in photographic tro picals
– scen ic views of tropical lan dscapes. The photo is u sually altered in a way that
makes it sophisticated a nd releva nt, givi ng it a n edge. There’s a ren ewed interest
in simple mark making, such as looking at grain in timber and cracks in dried mu d.
Do designs re-appear over time? Everything we currently see is a re-working of
something that has happened in the past, o r is a mi mic of n atu re. Fo r example,
flo rals a re always there, but they have morphed an d chan ged. Design s have
been drawn, photographed and x-rayed. They have been embroidered, printed,
digitally printed and so on , as techn ology has chan ged.
What do you love about antique textiles? The histo ry, the jo urn ey of the
piece and how time has faded the colou r and perhaps obscu red the motif. I love
old worn rugs where you ca n see the struc ture within. Collections of antique
textiles are like a librar y for me.
Where do you find them? I like visiting upholsterers a nd buying fabric they
have pulled off old furniture. That ’s a great resource. I often buy collections of
antique swatches. Most things are very hard to find in Australia and I have to
go to antique markets in Europe, usually France, Italy and the UK. In Europe,
I can find things as pieces of cloth, whereas in Australia the cloth would be in a
garment. I often go to au ctio ns of deceased estates.
Where can people see them? There is a vast collection of textiles in European
museums. In Austra lia, the best collection of textiles a nd clothing is in the
Powerhouse Muse um in Sydney.
How have textiles and antiques blended for you? I find inspiration from
a ntique tex tiles... In looking at tex tiles, I also obviou sly look at tex tiles in fu rnitu re,
leading me to be interested in the furn iture itself, an d an tiques i n general. And
w hile I ’ve been looking for fabric, I ’ve been collecting furniture as well. It’s ve ry
hard to separate the two. I
