where colour, lifestyle, harmony through materials, and privacy all
come into play. While a modern, two-storey cube, the pool house is
softened through the use of textural plantings. And it even ensures
the hard ground surfaces have a visual softness to them.
The slag wall is perhaps one of the most dynamic features. The
clients love the colour blue, so David injected this hue into the struct ure.
The screening element makes the wall functional, plus the stainless
steel cage provides a dynamic sculptural visual with the blue
recycled slag within. At night, it comes into its own. “The element is
lit from within, and emits a smouldering glow,” says David.
A concrete plinth pulls the pool house and outdoors together,
seamlessly extending out and surrounding the swimming pool. The
height has been raised slightly and has incorporated an infinity edge
to further enhance its seamless look and feel.
“The water hugs the glass-tiled edge and disappears below a
stainless steel grate,” explains David. “A sunning deck extends out
over the pool into the garden beyond.”
This trick visually joins the two outdoor zones, where a series of
stone slabs and ipe wood decks add interest and practicality to the
large space, leading visitors through the various areas. And, working
towards what’s shaping up to be the number-one inclusion for any
garden in any part of the world, “these sinuous pathways culminate
and encircle a fire pit”, says David.
And sound has not been forgotten, either. Adding to the ‘retreat
feel’ of the space is a fountain set into the concrete deck around the
pool. “The small water feature cast into the concrete deck provides
subtle noise to eliminate any distractions from beyond the garden
walls,” explains David. Bliss. I Visit davidhocker.com .
The interior living space seamlessly connects
with the swimming pool, thanks to the concrete
plinth moving from the pool house’s interior to
the exterior and encircling the water. While the
garden features various zones, so too does this
area, with a sun deck raised above the space.
