separate room in the middle of the house (“friends say we should
knock down the wall, but I like it like this”).
With a new appreciation for her surrounds, she put her creative
eye to task. While a two-bedroom house, only one functions as such.
The biggest room in the home is dedicated to the dining table, and
the second ‘bedroom’ today houses a television and a seat for George
the Labrador. An enclosed verandah out the back is the study, where
Ann-Louise started and ran her business for a year and a half. Plus,
there’s the laundry and bathroom, which was brought up to
‘tolerable’ with a lick of paint and some beautiful designer pieces.
Arriving in Australia with only 25kg of ‘stuff’ – linen curtains, three
bedspreads, three contemporary dala-horses and a coffee perculator
furnit ure was an issue. However, she found the city’s best second-
hand and antiques stores, and there was Ikea and verge collection.
“Nothing was ever planned,” reveals Ann-Louise. “I wouldn’t
think ‘I need this’. I would run into things or find it. That’s how the
aesthetic came together.” This creative accident has certainly worked.
Today, Ann-Louise, who confesses she finds it hard to relax, says
that the home instantly calms her. “When I come home, it doesn’t
matter how dressed up or stressed about work I am, I come in and
it is my retreat. I walk around with bare feet, and sit on the front
verandah and just be. It’s certainly not my personality – I usually
rush about – but that’s just what my home does to me. It’s a retreat.”
And we can certainly see why. I
