talians Alessandra Ferruzzi Sama and Carlos Sama pack up their
teenage children each summer and decamp from the family’s
main residence in Monaco to spend the whole summer at their
holiday home surrounded by vineyards, olive groves and
maritime pines on the Spanish island of Formentera.
The tiniest of the Balearic islands, Formentera is a mere 20
kilometres from one end to the other and only a 20-minute sail
from Ibiza. The low-key, hippy chic beachside life has seduced a hip
international design crowd – celebrity designers Philippe Starck and
Ron Arad both have homes here. The main attractions of Formentera
are its laid-back tranquillity, unspoilt nature and beautiful blue sea.
Theisland also provides a wonderful sense of freedom with
its infinite beaches, steep cliffs and open countryside.
Naturally chic with a subtle combination of rustic and ethnic, the
renovated finca (Spanish rural property) is built around courtyards
and patios – in unison with the relaxed island attitude. Inspiration
from Morocco, France and Portugal are noted, from elements of the
architecture to the cool polished cement interiors, the stone-front
facade, courtyard living spaces and roof terraces and patios.
Decorated with finds from the family’s travels, the summer
home has both a personal and unpretentious feel. Furnishings and
handmade pieces from Argentina, Uruguay, France, Italy and
