Lotersztain is no stranger to big names. Born in Argentina in 1977,
but raised by Polish parents, he’s called Brisbane home since
moving to Australia in 1998. And he’s continually pushed himself
as a creative thinker since graduating from Griffith University in
2000 as the Design Institute of Australia’s Best Design Student.
His design studio is known for the mix of work it tackles
nationally and internationally, working with names such as the
Queensland Art Gallery, Planex and Escofet on product, furniture,
branding, art direction, interior and architectural commissions.
A keen traveller who draws upon the experience of other
countries and cultures to inspire him towards innovative design
solutions, Alex recently visited Perth to talk to student designers.
He says it’s probably his passion for travelling and his passion for
being passionate that encouraged him to push his own boundaries.
“There are a lot of people and designers out there, and the
difference between you and the other [designers] is your ability
to communicate your ideas and be passionate in translating your
confidence to any project you do,” he says.
Juggling the dual roles as director of Alex Lotersztain Studio and
its f urniture product brand Derlot, Alex says the key for him is to
always keep his work as diverse, fresh and fun as possible.
“The projects that we look to get involved in are as diverse as
collaborating with the packaging for chocolate, to designing a hotel,
to working on feature lighting,” he says. “On top of that, we’re
working on our range of furniture that’s manufactured in Australia
