‘ B espoke’ design is the n ew bu zzwo rd, acco rding to Lo ndo n’s premier design
even t – Decorex Intern atio na l 2010. And its moo d cer tainly defied global gloom,
w ith an upbeat vibe a nd bu sy stands. A key featu re at Decorex was the massive
depar tu re fro m the con cept of mass-produced design , i nstead with a n emphasis on
individually pe rson alised spaces. The smar t people are looking to create individual
interio rs. They don ’t want to have what their frien ds have, they wa nt their homes
a nd interiors to be ex ten sio ns of their person ality. Perhaps, in this sen se, ‘ bespoke’
has beco me the anti-tre nd? People taking a tailo r-made appro ach to design –
bo rrowing fro m different designers, different eras, differe nt ethnicities, to create
their own signatu re home. Tren ds D ecorex showcased custom optio ns in ha nd-
painted tiles, door han dles an d hardware accesso ries, cu r tain ro ds an d finials, as
well as several small tex tile co mpan ies displaying exclusive, hand-printed design s.
On the furniture front, we’re looking at a future where designs are lighter and
smaller, with elegan t shapes that are a modern take on traditio na l styles. In
evidence were lacqu ered finishes paying ho mage to the 1920s, as well as u nu sua l
veneers, an d simple detail is back in fu rnitu re. There were plen ty of option s to
cu sto mise ca rpets an d ru gs to tie in with cu rtains an d sofas. An other big trend is
the revival of wall upholster y, w here designers are using fabric s o n walls to create
individual spaces in which to cocoo n. Colou rs? Think yellow, with pu rple an d
mauve tones coming through in interiors fabrics. Focus/10 is another exciting
even t, held at the D esign Ce ntre, Chelsea Ha rbou r. It’s where the latest trends in
intern atio na l bra nds are sho wcased in select trade showro oms. The tren d here was
high decoration , agai n where tradition al styles take on a mo dern interpretation .
On the fabric front, there is a move away from homogenous looks and designers
let loose with brillia nt palettes to create sumptuous tex tu res: velvets a re big news,
as are distressed finishes an d bespoke wallpapers a nd fabrics. In all, Lo ndo n’s
Decorex and Focus/10 was an exciting glimpse at a vibrant future for interiors.
