and authenticity. Valuable fob watches
sit alongside faux-metals and knick-knacks
from a t wo-dollar shop. Meticulously
printed on hand-gilded paper, Nairn
bestows an elegance on the enduring
and the disposable, the real and fake.
The playful interchange of Nairn’s
‘pick-and-mix’ aesthetic exposes the folly
of equating good taste with social status.

Artist Avital Sheffer is an inter n atio n ally
recognised artist and recipient of
numerous awards. She is interested in
the ‘frayed edges of religions and
mythologies’, where cross-fer tilisation
with other cultures occurs. From this, she
discovers universal aesthetic principles
that reveal intimate aspects of human
idiosyncrasies and needs that are still
relevant to the present.
The artwork The thread of beauty woven
in the flow of lines through
this work is combined with
characters from ancient
and sacred Middle Eastern
texts. These charac ters
are recombined with
motifs in her hand-formed

Title Various Tensions
Artist Marzena Topka was awarded
the annual Galerie Düsseldorf/Curtin
University department of art Post-
Graduate Scholarship Award. In her
installation and video work, Marzena
uses the strategy of destabilisation
and the slowing down of perception in
her attempt to shift the viewer’s focus
onto the everyday.
The ar twork Various Tensions utilises
a sewing machine – the winding on
mechanism in particular. Words and
expressions affiliated with ‘thread ’ inform
the artwork, along with the actual material
as it is mechanically drawn under tension.
The peripheral movement, and the
interactivity of singular lines of thread
next to the bobbin, become the final
focus of the video.
Medium DVD (work in progress),
two-screen video installation.

Artist Martin Heine works from the back
of the canvas, pushing colour through
holes in the weave to produce brilliant
patterns of tiny dots. These pixels in paint
are the plastic equivalent of a life in which
all that was once solid slips away. A major
monograph on his work, Now the Hard
Par t: The Work of Mar tin Hei ne, 1982-2010
by Dr David Bromfield, is to be published
by Brown Art in late 2010.
The artwork This new work engages
the fragility of memory and desire through
landscape. Martin’s technique allows for a
so phisticated su r f ace echoi ng the decayed
grand doorway and wall. It conjures
romantic or even sinister notions about the
history of this hidden house and garden,
while remaining charming and accessible.
