What Art deco is the modern name for
the period between the two world wars,
when design became more simplified and
architectural. e period name coined for
it was art moderne. Many designs as we
know them today, such as coffee tables,
comfortable lounges, soft furnishings and
cocktail bars, hailed from this period.
Why Art deco specialist Liz Capocchi,
of Victorian antiques and interiors store
Capocchi, says art deco pieces have gained in
popularity and value since the late 60s and
early 70s, the best pieces coming from France.
"Good art deco design sits extremely well
with French empire-period furniture (c1810-
1825) and is still considerably less expensive,"
says Liz. "But it's becoming extremely
difficult to find good-quality pieces."

selection of art deco treasures was described
as a "sophisticated celebration of one of the
most brilliant chapters in Parisian cultural

from Easter Island. Fetched £220,000

factor Only about 30 authenticated rapa are
recorded, most in international museums.
Estimated at £10,000, it attracted interest
from Australia, Belgium, America and
London, so the estimate was revised to
£20,000-£40,000. All phone lines were
booked and bidders flew in for the sale.

and were snapped up by the first person on

feet (below), upholstered in a Warwick fabric.
