HOME EAGLE BAY
it's no amount of clever interior design and
beautiful art will redeem a bad night's sleep.
e main living area is similarly clean and
neutral, mixing a few classic pieces, such
as the sleek table and chairs by Italian firm
Arper, with big custom-made sofas.
e subtle use of natural textures, warm
to ashy tones and plenty of white draw the
eye naturally to the bush beyond, leaving
those 4.5-metre-high glass windows to
do the talking. Glass panels in the kitchen
fold back to an outdoor area to further
integrate the inside with the out, while the
cantilevered wings of the building provide
shelter from prevailing winds.
e clients visit at least four times a year,
and it's always with a twinge of sadness that
they leave their 'home away from home'
behind -- a common trial of long-distance
relationships. But, unlike most, this one is
bound for a happy ending. I
The entry courtyard (here & below) features local plants and
succulents to set the scene for a 'bush sanctuary' as guests walk
along the walkway (below). Charcoal pavers, which are repeated
in the outdoor entertaining area, mark the way. Western red
cedar boards have been treated in Cabot's Ebony exterior stain
and clad the front door, as well as the exterior wings of the home.
Window and door joinery mimics the cladding colour, finished in
Woodland Grey aluminium powdercoating by Dulux.

What is your favourite piece in the home? I love the
oval Arper dining room table (see contacts below).
We've squeezed 18 around it and I adore the way you
can simply wipe it down and nothing marks it.
Your favourite dining destination in the South West?
For quality of wine, food and friendly service -- Leeuwin
Estate (Margaret River, leeuwinestate.com.au).
What's your favourite hotel around the world?
Hotel Villa del Quar, outside Verona in Italy. It dates
back to the 16th century and has been in the same
family for generations. It is small, set in vineyards, has a
Michelin-starred restaurant and, most importantly, is
only 10 minutes from the amphitheatre where operas
are held each summer (hotelvilladelquar.it).
Do you have any design tips for holiday homes?
I like to keep the colour palette neutral, clean and clutter
free; then I add colour and drama with paintings and
accessories. This allows me to visually alter spaces
without changing the significant pieces of furniture.
