AWARD The Marshall Clifton Award for Residential
Architecture -- Houses. SPONSOR Scoop Publishing.
Designed for a retired couple, this low-maintenance home
is a modernist-inspired beach house, tempered with a critical
regionalist response to climate and place. With minimal
lines and planar forms, materiality and detailing are drawn
from a local palette of materials. It is based on a courtyard
typology, a pond with private and public entertainment
spaces organised around it. This duality is emphasised by
separate treatments of private and public spaces: the public
spaces are open-plan, outward-oriented and unenclosed,
gathered under a floating Miesian roof. The private spaces
are inwardly focused and enclosed within thick masonry
walls for a sense of privacy and retreat. Drawing on the
spatial qualities of the international style and the regional
context of coastal Western Australia, it's a unique take on
contemporary Australian architecture. batessmart.com.au.
