Queenies Lunchroom in suburban
Auckland is a refreshing rejection of
slick, minimal cafe design. Comfor table,
colourful and eclectic, the interior was
developed around owner Allana Owen's
collection of Coca-Cola boxes, her antique
marble butcher's table and a collection of
artworks by local artist Tyla Vaeau. The
Coca-Cola boxes were reinforced and
upholstered to become stools and Tyla
created a huge paint-by-numbers mural
on the cafe wall. The sta dress in vintage
aprons and serve big meringues and great
co ee. Visit queenieslunchroom.co.nz.
Raow is a group of Victoria University graduates who have
banded together with the mission of creating beautiful,
sustainable, everyday products. The first product, the
Raow floor lamp, is a kit lamp made from plywood. It
comes complete with cord and eco-friendly bulb and
is a cinch to assemble. Instant gratification!
Chuck it on the floor or dangle it where
you like and enjoy the shadows cast.
REAL BREW HA HA
If you enjoy a drink in cosy surroundings,
try the award-winning Neighbourhood
Brewbar in Auckland, created by Mac's
brewery with Jasmax architects and Shine
Limited design company. The intimate bar
features more than 130 retro lamps, which
hang from the ceiling, and were sourced
from an online auction site. The bar's
quirky design won a bronze at the 2009
Best Design Awards held by the Designers
Institute of New Zealand. Visit macs.co.nz.
