An oldie, but a goodie, Chair_One,
produced in 2004, is a show-stopping
design, $725, while the Sparkling chair
(below) by Marcel Wanders, is an
exciting new 2010 Magis release.
30 INSITE WINTER
DESIGN ADDICT: MAGIS
We speak with Alberto Perazza, the son of the man who started innovative Italian furniture
company Magis, during his one-day visit to exclusive Perth stockist Table & Chair Company.
Describe the design philosophy of Magis? Magis is a family-run company that is based
in the north-east of Italy near Venice. Since the very beginning we have focused on modern
design using di erent materials and technologies. Magis is a fac tory-free company in the
sense that we don't physically produce inhouse, but our products are contracted out to a
network of suppliers. We incorporate the work of designers such as Stefano Giovannoni,
Konstantin Grcic, Jasper Morrison, Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec and Marcel Wanders.
What can we expect from Magis in 2010? We introduced new products
at Milan's Salone Internazionale del Mobile [see our report
from p91]. There were new products designed by
Marcel Wanders (Sparkling and Troy chairs) and
new designs by Konstantin Grcic (Venice chair),
as well as designs by Jasper Morrison (Trattoria
Family and Pipe Family) and others.
Any other news? We are bringing a chair
(Aviva) and a trestle (Teatro) that were
designed in the 1980s back into production.
Is Magis experimenting with any new
materials? Liquid wood. It is
very green because it recycles
sawdust and you can mould the
recyclable material using the existing
furniture moulds. Already the
technology has been used in some
applications, but not with furniture.
We are finalising this and have
been working on it for two to
three years. Hopefully by 2011
it will be ready. Table & Chair

Illustration has experienced something of
a renaissance over the past decade, with
adver tising departments everywhere -- from
Chanel's to Nike's and Vogue's -- clamouring
onboard this new brand of creative cool. Get an
insight into the industry with this book, which
features 150 of the best illustrators working
today. A terrific resource. Edited by Julius
Wiedemann, $99, Taschen.
A gifted sculptor, painter, draftsman and
printmaker, Alber to Giacometti is one of the
most significant artists of the 20th century.
Reflections on his life and art accompany
beautiful images in this book, highlighting the
influence of his prolific career. Considering one
of Giacometti's sculptures recently sold for more
than $100 million at an auction, this book is a
bargain! By Fondation Beyeler, $130, Hatje Cantz.
