Home' Scoop Homes and Art : Insite 25 Winter 2010 Contents This striking home is the result of a great working
relationship between the owners and Humphrey Builders
and Designers. Having successfully employed Humphrey
Builders in 1997 and 2000, Kylie and Wayne approached Dean
Humphrey to design and construct their dream home.
Together they put together an architectural design brief -
a ground floor level for the three teenage children and an
upper floor for the parents. Upstairs included the master
bedroom, kitchen, living area and office, leveraging views
of the park and the city. They wanted modern design with
wester n red cedar, brushbox timber and travertine marble.
Because it s an elevated block, a skillion roof was used
to reduce the impact of the home on the streetscape. It also
allowed us to angle the solar hot water panels for maximum
efficiency and hide them from view. The solar heating was
connected to a ring main which delivered hot water to taps
without waiting time.
To maximise views a large alfresco was designed on the
south side of the home. A wall of cedar bi-fold doors open
to create an immersive indoor/outdoor effect; the illusion of
being among the tree tops. The east elevation captures views
of the city while minimising overlooking issues.
Kylie and Wayne describe the process as a team effort.
They say Humphrey Builders and Designers were "upfront,
honest and fair; the final result excellent both from a design
and building perspective".
