Australian Antiques and
Fine Art Fair One of the
main events in Australia,
this fair is for the high end
of the market. Dealers from
throughout Australia and the
world attend to both buy and to sell,
while Australian collectors, as well as
international visitors, attend to buy.
Royal Hall of Industries, Moore Park,
Sydney, May 19-23, antique-artfairs.com.au.
International roundup Two serious fairs
with museum-quality pieces are on between
March and June, and Maastricht is the place
to be if you want to spend two million euros
($A3.1 million), for example, on a pair of
18th-century commodes. For those not
familiar with 18th-century European
furniture terms, commodes are very grand
chests of drawers, often with rare and costly
veneers and gilt bronze mounts, made for
public reception rooms, such as the salon and
drawing room, rather than the bedroom. In
Britain, the commode was a cabinet with doors,
made of similar materials, for reception rooms.
e Armory Show, New York, March 4-7,

Netherlands, March 12-21, tefaf.com.
DECO RINGS IN VOGUE
Cottesloe's House of Riches has reported a continued interest in Art Deco rings
as engagement rings. "Deco rings have always been popular..." says part-owner
Ann Broadley. "The Internet is bringing younger people into the store and a lot
of them are after something a bit di erent. They want something that's not mass
produced and they like the clean lines and symmetrical shapes of the deco rings.
We actually can't get enough of them to keep up with demand."
