Stuart made a conscious effort to bring in
a high level of craftsmanship and add
individuality to the home. e front door is
the perfect example of this, being crafted
from solid Tasmanian blackheart sassafras
and fitted with a long, custom-made copper
handle. is will weather over time and
eventually show where the owners hold it.
" e couple are different heights, he's
tall and she's shorter, so the handle will
become impressioned with oil in different
places -- over time the door becomes about
them," says Stuart.
Another mark of individuality is the
12.5m-long solid Tasmanian blackwood
bookcase in the hallway, which is referred to
as the library. "Originally, I had just drawn
long, pure joinery. en I started to think
about the owners' love of books (they have
1000s of them) and their rich culture in
science, art and music," he says.
Stuart, who was once a musician, began
to sketch musical notation and eventually
formulated it into a vertical and horizontal
design that resembled shelving. e result is
spectacular. " e rhythm is heavily embedded
in the result, which is more noticeable when
the books aren't there," he says.
