NOT SO CONVENTIONAL
At the recent BPN Sustainability Awards, the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre
(opened in June 2009) not only won the prestigious Public Building and Urban Design category,
but was also pronounced the awards' Overall Winner. These awards are just two in a string of
accolades the building has won for its stunning design and environmental features.
The brainchild of joint-venture architects, Woods Bagot and NH Architecture, the centre was
built from the ground up with the environment in mind and is the world's first 6 Star Green Star
environmentally rated convention centre. Features include sustainable use of building materials,
the first privately funded black-water treatment plant in a public building in Australia, solar hot-
water systems, displacement ventilation and radiant slab heating and cooling.
While we love its enviro focus, it's the 18-metre glass facade, which provides the foyer with an
abundance of natural light and sweeping views of the Yarra River and Melbourne skyline, that we
think gives it its 'phoar' factor. Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre mcec.com.au.
