Title: Desert Waterholes
Artist: Avreanna Hobbs is a student from
Wangkatjungka Remote Community
School in northern Western Australia. In
September 2009, she was part of a group
of students there who joined their elders
in the painting studio, bringing together
artists aged from 13 to 75 years.
The shared tradition of stories and
family clan groups allowed these young
artists to produce some remarkable
paintings under the guidance of their
experienced senior mentors.

Title: A Taste of Orange
Artist: Margaret Woodward spent the
early part of her professional life as an art
teacher in Perth and Sydney. Today she
is a full-time painter exhibiting regularly
around Australia. She has won numerous
awards such as the Wynne Prize for
landscape painting and the Portia Geach
Memorial Award (twice). Her work is held
in many galleries and major corporate and
private collections throughout Australia,
Europe and the USA.
The Artwork: A Taste of Orange combines
Margaret's skills with figurative work and
still life. Set in a landscape, it positions the
domestic image of a young boy in tension
with his exotic surroundings. His anxious
expression is at odds with the seemingly
innocuous orange floral pattern, inviting
multiple interpretations from the viewer.

Title: Billabong Retreat
Artist: Elizabeth Mavrick is a master in
her medium and has been creating glass
wall sculptures and panels for more than
20 years. Elizabeth has participated in
many exhibitions and is constantly working
toward ongoing commissions. Her work is
among the most collectable of glass artists
in the Western Australia.
The Artwork: Elizabeth's mastery of
glass is reflected in her amazing use of
contrasting and complementary colours in
Billabong Retreat. This piece was created
after a visit to the Pilbara's Kalgan Gorge.
Elizabeth describes this oasis in the desert
as "beautiful and rugged." Elizabeth
and her partner camped in the pebbled
riverbed under the sheer rock face of the
gorge. "I was inspired by the changing
highlights as the sunlight chased shadows
across the rock faces," she says.
