Title: Awely (Women's Ceremony)
Artist: Ada Bird Petyarre is an Indigenous
artist born around 1930 on the old Utopia
station in the Northern Territory. She
emerged as a talented participant in
workshops organised by art facilitator
Rodney Gooch in the late 1970s. Bright
colour, flowing lines and fine dotting
distinguish her work.
The Artwork: Ada's painting is one of
many works in this travelling exhibition
from Flinders University Art Museum. It
the Australian War Memorial in Canberra.
This is the second exhibition Bernard Ollis
and Wendy Sharpe have shown at United
Galleries in Perth and the first time they
have exhibited work together based on
the same theme. Journeys showcases the
recent eclectic European travels of the t wo
artists over the past two years.
The Artwork: Artists, writers and
composers have long travelled to foreign
countries in search of new experiences and
often produce some of their most original
and important works in the process.
Such is the case with this composition.

22. PURIST GALLERY
Title: Love Conversations: Diary to
surveys the work of artists from outstations
of Utopia (northeast of Alice Springs)
in the late 20th Century. Encompassing
batik, paintings, works on paper, sculpture
and other three dimensional objects, the
works are drawn from collections of the
late Rodney Gooch (1949-2002) who had
a significant impact on the artists and their
communities in the Central Desert. The
pieces reflec t an intimate knowledge of the
land, its flora and fauna and the customary
law associated with it.

She has also received many scholarships
and major commissions including one from
