Title: Glass & Egg Cup
Artist: Kathryn Haug is an up-and-coming
figurative artist whose signature is thickly
applied and gestural paint depictions of
humble everyday domestic objects and
memories of a blissful rural childhood.
Using economy of line Kathryn (Kate)
manages to convey complex objects with
a unique liveliness. Kate won the 2008
"Cream" Award, given by Emerge Art
Space to an outstanding tertiary arts
graduate. She was also a finalist in the

Young Artists With Artitude
The Artwork: Glass & Egg Cup is an
intriguingly pared back, yet evocative,
image showing the power of line that Kate
demonstrates in her work. The thickly
applied oil paint has a luscious tac tility that
immediately sets up a dramatic narrative.

12. ARTITJA FINE ART
Title: Brumby Foal
Artist: Janine McAullay Bott was winner
of the 2009 Wandjuk Marika 3D Memorial
Award at the 26th Telstra National Aboriginal
& Torres Strait Islander Art Awards.
The Artwork: Janine uses recycled palm
fronds and associated materials to weave
shapes of significance to her Nyoongar
heritage. In this sculpture, the brumby foal
represents Indigenous youth; depicted
as being playful and carefree, in a safe
environment learning to be independent
and explore the world.
