UP IN LIGHTS
Brendan Van Hek is one happy artist, having recently won the $12,500 Joondalup Art
Award. Only invited artists are able to apply for the award, and for 2009 invitations
numbered less than 40. Brendan made his winning work, Yellow Composition #1, from
neon salvaged from a factory floor.
Felicitations go to Peter Dailey, the artist
sponsored this year by The Syndicate. The
Syndicate, initiated by Lloyd Horn and Ron
Wise, is made up of 10 people who choose
a single artist to sponsor each year.
At the end of the year each member of the
group receives a work produced by that
artist. It's a win-win situation.
The funds enable the artist to focus
on their art career, rather than having to
find supplementary employment; while
each sponsor adds another work to their
collection, as well as enjoying that warm,
fuzzy philanthropic feeling.
