cool it in summer.
"The big thing about the house is that it
has dramatic street appeal with the gutters
and big chunky timbers that wrap around
and really stand out," says Chris.
Chris sourced all of the finishes from
Indonesia, importing marble for the floor,
granite for the water features, lava stone
for the interior feature wall and Indonesian
plywood for the ceiling. Materials such
as shoji screens, bamboo and plywood
embrace the Asian theme.
The bottom level is spacious and open
plan. Standing in the kitchen, there are
stunning views of the canal on one side
and the pool area on the other.
The kitchen bench appears to float
above the glossy timber floors and blue
LED lighting is used as a background to the
floating plasma television.
Chris' creative imagination didn't stop
with the Asian theme. Also inspired by the
surrounding waters he introduced quirky
boat-like features such as portholes.
"I added the boat theme because the
house is on the canal and when you walk
up the stairs there's a huge port hole
that gives the impression that you're the
captain in the driver's seat. You look out
and the water is all around you and also
below you," he says.
The house won the 2009 Building Design
Association of Queensland State award for
Best Bathroom, Best Pool or Water Feature,
and Best Interior.
"The pool is special and the whole house
opens onto it," says Chris. "At twilight, the
lighting creates an amazing atmosphere
by lighting the colours and materials of
Towering plants, stone feature walls
and large windows blur the boundaries
between inside and outside and create a
resort feel. Chris says the major feature of
the house is that it's relaxing to live in.
"The big thing is that it's comfortable
and fun to live in," he says.
"My goal is to keep creating
adventurous designs." I
